The City of Des Moines, the Des Moines Police Department, as well as South King Fire & Rescue will be opening a cooling center this Thursday, August 12 and Friday, August 13, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The center will be located at the Des Moines Senior Activity Center, located at 2045 S. 216th Street (map below).
This is in response to the National Weather Service’s’Excessive heat warning‘, which predicts “dangerously hot conditions with temperatures ranging from the mid 80s to 90s today, from the 90s to nearly 100 degrees Thursday and Fridayâ¦”

* WHATâ¦ Dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures
mid 80s to lower 90s today, 90s almost 100 degrees
Thursday and Friday. Highs still close to 90 on Saturday. The hottest
temperatures in the interior southwest, the foothills of the Cascades and
Valleys of the Cascades.
* Oâ¦ Southwest Interior, Tacoma area, East Puget Sound
Lowlands, Bellevue and vicinity, Seattle and vicinity,
Whatcom and Skagit County Waterfalls, Snohomish Waterfalls
and King Counties and Pierce and Lewis Counties Waterfalls.
* WHENâ¦ Noon today to 7:00 pm PDT Saturday.
* IMPACTSâ¦ Extreme heat will greatly increase the
potential for heat-related illness, especially for
work or participate in outdoor activities.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILSâ¦ Night shift on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday morning will be poor in eastern Puget Sound, the
Adjacent Cascade foothills and Seattle metropolitan areas away
some water. Night temperatures will remain in the 70s,
and only briefly fall in the mid-60s at the end of the night.
PRECAUTIONARY / PREPARATION ACTIONS …
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay outside
out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstance.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outdoors. When
postpone strenuous activities until the early hours of the morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat and heat exhaustion
stroke. Wear light, loose clothing when
possible. To reduce the risks during exterior work, the Occupational
The Safety and Health Administration recommends that you schedule frequently
breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anybody
submerged in heat should be moved to a cool, shaded place.
