Smithville District Names Activity Center | K12

SMITHVILLE – In keeping with the district’s mascot, the new building currently under construction north of the Smithville School District Athletic Field near Commercial Avenue will be named the Warrior Activity Center.

Executive Director of Support Services Robert Hedgecorth told the school district board on Wednesday, January 19 that the name was chosen following feedback from community members, students and staff through a survey process. who asked for the preferred name for the new building. Hundreds of names were submitted.

After names were suggested, Hedgecorth brought in a committee to review the names and the plan was to submit two to three building names to the council for consideration. After reviewing the most popular names submitted, the committee unanimously submitted Warrior Activity Center.

“The committee decided not to use the word ‘athletics’ rather than ‘activity’ because they believe the building will be used for all kinds of courses and not just athletics,” Hedgecorth said. “We suggested silly names as well as serious names. A few of the popular choices included the Warrior Training Center or the Warrior Training Facility.

The school board unanimously approved the name choice this week.

Hedgecorth added that construction of the facility was about two weeks behind schedule due to construction crews being sick.

“We took the plumbing crew out for two weeks due to COVID, staff and other illnesses,” he explained. “Hopefully we can make up some time in February or March. However, being delayed is not the worst thing. We would like to see an opening at the end of May, but if it is mid-June we will still have the building ready for the next school year.

The new building will help make the weight room more accessible with classes that attract more than half of the high school population. Additionally, the facility will handle wrestling practice, which includes both boys and girls. There will also be dressing rooms for visiting teams. Visiting teams currently use a track storage shed. The center will also have a kiosk.

Additionally, the two-story facility will have a lower level furnished with the weight room, lockers, workout rooms and coaches’ offices. The upper level will feature wrestling mats, more coaches offices, restrooms and a concession area.
